Suspension: Description and Operation
EXCEPT BRAVADA, SONOMA GT,
SYCLONE & TYPHOON
Fig. 1 Exploded View Of Front Drive Axle. Except Bravada, Sonoma GT, Syclone & Typhoon:
The front suspension is independent with torsion bars attached to the lower control arms. The front differential, Fig. 1, is mounted to the frame, with universal joints mounted on the inner and and outer ends of the axle shafts. The front axle utilizes a center disconnect system which makes shifting in or out of four-wheel drive possible at any vehicle speed. When the transfer case is shifted, a vacuum diaphragm locks or unlocks the center disconnect. This system replaces automatic-locking front hubs.

This front axle uses a full-time drive system with no disengagement feature. The differential Fig. 2, is used to allow the front wheels to turn at different rates of speed while the front axle continues to transmit the driving force.
