Subject:
Wheel Cover Rust (install Insulator Kit)
Models:
1993-94 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with Stainless Steel Wheel Covers and Steel Wheels
Condition
Some customers may comment on rust visible around the circumference of the wheel cover where it meets the wheel rim flange. This rust may migrate onto the tire's whitewall.
Cause
The inside circumference of the stainless steel wheel cover can rub against the steel wheel rim flange. The black paint on the wheel's rim flange may wear, exposing bare metal causing light surface rust.
Correction
1. Remove all wheel covers. (Even if rust condition exists on only one wheel/cover, all four wheels/covers should be inspected and insulators installed.)
2. Polish any surface rust off the wheel covers circumference using a light abrasive.
(WHEEL COVER REPLACEMENT IS NOT NECESSARY.)
3. Remove any rust from the wheel's rim flange and clean flange prior to paint touch-up.
4. Touch up any bare metal on the wheel rim flange using corrosive resistant primer such as PPG's DP90 (or equivalent) prior to paint top coat. Always follow manufacturer's instructions.
5. Procure insulator kit, part number 25536180.
Note:
One kit will service four wheels.
6. Remove white plastic adhesive protector from back of insulator and install five insulators on each wheel rim flange in a star pattern (at approximately each wheel nut position). Refer to illustration.
Install insulator over wheel rim flange by opening slit in insulator and pressing insulator firmly in place over the wheel rim flange. The insulators adhesive portion should point toward the center of the wheel.
Note:
Rubber washers contained in the insulator kit may be discarded.
7. Install wheel cover.
