Drive Range - Manual Second (From Drive Range Third Gear):

DRIVE RANGE - MANUAL SECOND (From DRIVE RANGE THIRD GEAR)

"A" SHIFT SOLENOID - OFF
INPUT SPRAG - OVERRUNNING
FORWARD BAND - APPLIED
"B" SHIFT SOLENOID - ON
SECOND CLUTCH - APPLIED
2/1 BAND - APPLIED
INPUT CLUTCH - APPLIED/
1/2 SUPPORT ROLLER CLUTCH - NOT EFFECTIVE HOLDING

When the gear selector lever is moved to the MANUAL SECOND RANGE (2), the manual valve (404) allows line pressure to enter the D-2 passage. D-2 fluid seats #8 checkball (372) and is directed to the 2-3 shift valve (357) to shift the valve. When shifted, D-2 fluid enters the manual 2-1 servo feed passage and strokes the manual 2/1 servo assembly (104-116) to apply the 2/1 band (680). The third clutch is released by allowing 3rd clutch/Io-1st apply fluid to exhaust by seating #4 checkball (372) against the lo-1st passage and into the 3rd clutch passage. 3rd clutch fluid is then directed to #9 checkball (372) and seats it against the 3rd fluid passage forcing the fluid through an exhaust orifice into the 3rd fluid passage. 3rd fluid is then sent to the 2-3 shift valve (357) where it exhausts. Since D-2 fluid overrides line pressure at the 2-3 shift valve (357), a manual 3-2 downshift will result even if "B" shift solenoid is "de-energized" or "turned off" (drive range 3rd gear solenoid state is: "A" shift solenoid off and "B" shift solenoid off). If the PCM receives the appropriate input signals from the VS sensor and TP sensor, "B" shift solenoid will "energize" or "turn on". "B" shift solenoid fluid is then directed to the 4-3 manual downshift valve (360) and the 3-2 manual downshift valve (356).

Manual Valve (404): Is moved by the gear selector lever allowing line pressure to enter the D-2 passage.

#8 Checkball (372): Located in the valve body (300), is fed D-2 fluid from the manual valve (404) and directs it to the 2-3 shift valve (357).

2-3 Shift Valve (357): When shifted by D-2 fluid, it allows D-2 fluid to enter the manual 2-1 servo feed passage to stroke the manual 2/1 servo assembly (104-116) and allows 3rd fluid to exhaust.

Manual 2/1 Servo Assembly (104-116): Applies the 2/1 band (680) during manual second and manual first gear ranges.

#4 Checkball (372): Located in the channel plate (400), it directs 3rd clutch/lo-1st exhaust fluid into the 3rd clutch passage.

"B" Shift Solenoid (315): When energized, it allows line pressure to enter the "B" shift solenoid passage and sends it to the 4-3 manual downshift valve (360) and 3-2 manual downshift valve (356). However, this event does not have to occur in order to achieve a manual 3-2 downshift.

3-2 Manual Downshift Valve (356): Is shifted by"B" shift solenoid fluid and prevents the 2-3 shift valve (357) from upshifting.
