POPPING OR CREAKING NOISE FROM INSTRUMENT PANEL - REPOSITION NUT, TIGHTEN AND RETORQUE BOLT

MODELS/YEARS:
1993 CUTLASS SUPREME COUPE AND SEDANS

CONDITION:
Some customers may comment about popping or creaking noises coming fmm behind or below the instrument panel.

CAUSE:
The anchor nut for the rear engine frame attachments may have rotated in the cage, contacting the sides of the retaining cage.

CORRECTION:
Reposition the nut, tighten and retorque the attaching bolt using the following procedure:

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.

2. Loosen the rear engine frame attaching bolt on the affected side of the vehicle.

3. Push upwards on the bolt and rotate approximately 60 degrees counter clockwise to eliminate the contact between the nut and wall of the retaining cage.

4. Finger tighten the bolt while applying downward pressure on the lower insulator retainer to prevent rotating the anchor nut.

5. Tighten the bolt and torque to 140 N-m (103 Lb.Ft.).

6. Remove vehicle from hoist and road test to ensure a satisfactory repair.
