Ignition Lock Cylinder & Upper Column Components - Without SIR


SHAFT LOCK, TURN SIGNAL CANCELLING CAM, UPPER BEARING SPRING, UPPER BEARING SEAT, INNER RACE, TURN SIGNAL SWITCH, BUZZER SWITCH & LOCK CYLINDER SET

Wheels of vehicle must be in straight ahead position. Failure to do so may cause improper alignment of some components during installation, resulting in column malfunction. Refer to Figs. 94 and 95 for parts identification.
1. Place key in ``lock'' position.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove screws from back of steering wheel and horn pad, disconnecting horn lead from cam tower.
4. Remove retainer and jam nut, then, using tool J-1859-03 or equivalent, the steering wheel.
5. Using tool J-23653-A or equivalent, depress shaft lock, then remove shaft lock retaining ring.
6. Remove shaft lock and shaft lock cover, then the turn signal cancelling cam.
7. Remove upper bearing spring, then the upper bearing seat.
8. Remove inner race.
9. Place turn signal in ``right turn'' position, then remove signal switch arm attaching screw and the arm.
10. Remove turn signal switch attaching screws and position switch out of way. If it is necessary to remove switch, remove wiring harness protector and hazard knob, then gently pull wire harness through gear shift lever bowl, column housing and lock housing cover.
11. Remove key from cylinder lock, and remove buzzer switch and clip, then reinsert key in cylinder lock and turn to ``lock'' position.
12. Remove lock retaining screw and lock cylinder set.

Assembly
1. Install lock cylinder set, torquing retaining screw to 26 lb in
2. Place key in ``run'' position, then install buzzer switch and clip.
3. Route turn signal switch wiring harness through lock housing cover, column housing and gear shift lever bowl, then secure switch, torquing retaining screws to 26 lb in
4. Install signal switch arm, torquing retaining screw to 18 lb in
5. Install hazard knob, then the inner race.
6. Install upper bearing seat, then the upper bearing spring.
7. Install turn signal cancelling cam, then the shaft lock.
8. Depress shaft lock, then install shaft lock retaining ring.
9. Install steering wheel, then the jam nut and retainer.
10. Install horn pad, then the wiring harness protector.
11. Connect battery ground cable.

LOCK HOUSING COVER, COVER END CAP, PIVOT & SWITCH ASSEMBLY, DIMMER SWITCH ROD ACTUATOR & TILT SPRING ASSEMBLY

Disassembly
1. Perform Disassembly steps for Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Upper Bearing Seat, Inner Race, Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Lock Cylinder Set.
2. Remove lock housing cover attaching screws and cover, then the tilt lever.
3. Remove cover housing end cap and the dimmer switch rod actuator.
4. On vehicles equipped with cruise control, unplug cruise control connector and remove multifunction lever.
5. On all models, gently pull pivot switch wiring harness through column housing and gear shift lever bowl.
6. Remove pivot pin, then the pivot and switch assembly.
7. Remove spring retainer, then the spring and spring guide.

Assembly
1. Coat spring guide and spring with lithium grease and install, then install spring retainer.
2. Install pivot and switch assembly, then the pivot pin.
3. Route pivot and switch assembly wiring harness through gear shift lever bowl and column housing.
4. Install dimmer switch rod actuator, then the gear shift lever bowl, ensuring bottom edge of dimmer switch rod actuator rests on bend in dimmer switch rod.
5. Install cover housing end cap.
6. On vehicles equipped with cruise control, plug in cruise control connector and install multifunction lever.
7. On all models, Install lock housing cover. Tighten screw in 12 o'clock position first, screw in 8 o'clock position second and screw in 4 o'clock position third, then torque in same order to 89 lb in
8. Perform Assembly steps for Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Upper Bearing Seat, Inner Race, Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Lock Cylinder Set.

COLUMN HOUSING, LOCK SHOES, ACTUATOR SECTOR ASSEMBLY, SWITCH ACTUATOR RACK, BEARINGS & LOCK BOLT ASSEMBLY

Disassembly
1. Perform Disassembly steps for Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Upper Bearing Seat, Inner Race, Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Lock Cylinder Set.
2. Perform Disassembly steps for Lock Housing Cover, Cover End Cap, Pivot & Switch Assembly, Dimmer Switch Rod Actuator & Tilt Spring Assembly.

3. Using pivot pin remover tool No. J-21854-01 or equivalent, remove pivot pins, Fig. 63.
4. Reinstall tilt lever.
5. Remove column housing assembly by pulling back on tilt lever and pulling housing down and away from column.
6. Remove drive shaft, then the switch actuator sector.
7. Remove switch actuator rack and rack preload spring, then the release lever pin and release lever.
8. Remove release lever spring, then the dowel pin.
9. Remove lock shoes and lock shoe springs, then the bearings.
10. Remove hex head bolt, then the lock bolt spring and lock bolt.

Assembly
1. Install bearings to column housing, then install drive shaft.
2. Install actuator sector, then the lock shoes.
3. Install dowel pin, then the lock shoe springs.
4. Install release lever spring, then the release lever.
5. Install release lever pin, then the rack preload spring.
6. Install switch actuator rack to actuator sector.
7. Install lock bolt and lock bolt spring, then the hex head bolt.
8. Install column housing assembly to column as follows:
a. Position column housing assembly and align switch actuator rack with pin on end of actuator rod.
b. Pull back on tilt lever, pushing column housing assembly onto column housing support assembly.
c. Release tilt lever to lock shoes.
9. Remove tilt lever.
10. Lubricate pivot pins with lithium grease and install them.
11. Perform Assembly steps for Lock Housing Cover, Cover End Cap, Pivot & Switch Assembly, Dimmer Switch Rod Actuator & Tilt Spring Assembly.
12. Perform Assembly steps for Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Upper Bearing Seat, Inner Race, Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Lock Cylinder Set.

SHAFT ASSEMBLY, COLUMN HOUSING SUPPORT, SHIFT TUBE ASSEMBLY, IGNITION SWITCH, DIMMER SWITCH & LOWER BEARING ASSEMBLY

Disassembly
1. Perform Disassembly steps for Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Upper Bearing Seat, Inner Race, Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Lock Cylinder Set.
2. Perform Disassembly steps for Lock Housing Cover, Cover End Cap, Pivot & Switch Assembly, Dimmer Switch Rod Actuator & Tilt Spring Assembly.
3. Perform Disassembly steps for Column Housing, Lock Shoes, Actuator Sector Assembly, Switch Actuator Rack, Bearings & Lock Bolt Assembly.
4. Remove steering column from vehicle.
5. Remove bearing retainer, then the attaching screws and the lower bearing.
6. Remove shaft assembly then disconnect lower shaft.
7. Remove sphere from upper shaft, then the retainer clip from the sphere.
8. Remove housing support assembly attaching screws, then the housing support assembly and dimmer switch rod.
9. Remove hex nut and hex head bolt, then the dimmer switch and mounting stud.
10. Remove gear shift bowl.

Assembly

1. Install gear shift lever bowl to jacket, then the dimmer switch rod to housing support.
2. Install housing support assembly, torquing attaching screws to 80 lb in
3. Install actuator rod assembly to track in housing support.
4. Install ignition switch and mounting stud, then adjust switch, Fig. 89.
5. Install retaining clip and sphere to upper shaft.
6. Install lower shaft to upper shaft with block tooth on shaft lower end of upper shaft at 12 o'clock position and notch at end of lower shaft at 4 o'clock position.
7. Lubricate shaft assembly with lithium grease and install to column.
8. Install column housing assembly to column.
9. Position column assembly and align switch actuator rack with pin on end of actuator rod.
10. Pull back on tilt lever, pushing column housing assembly onto column housing support assembly.
11. Release tilt lever to lock shoes, then remove tilt lever.
12. Lubricate inner surface of lower bearing with lithium grease, then install bearing and retaining screws.
13. Install bearing retainer.

14. Install dimmer switch, hex nut and hex head bolt, then adjust dimmer switch, Fig. 96.
15. Install steering column to instrument panel.
16. Install tilt lever.
17. Perform Assembly steps for Column Housing, Lock Shoes, Actuator Sector Assembly, Switch Actuator Rack, Bearings & Lock Bolt Assembly.
18. Perform Assembly steps for Lock Housing Cover, Cover End Cap, Pivot & Switch Assembly, Dimmer Switch Rod Actuator & Tilt Spring Assembly.
19. Perform Assembly steps for Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Upper Bearing Seat, Inner Race, Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Lock Cylinder Set.
