Engine - Wire Harness May Contact Exhaust Pipe Shield

Group Ref.: Chassis/Body Electrical

Bulletin No.: 338119

Date: September, 1993

SUBJECT:
OVERHEATED PLASTIC SMELL OR "SES" LIGHT MAY BE ON (REPAIR WIRING, ADD TIE STRAP)

MODELS:
1994 BUICK CENTURY
1994 OLDSMOBILE CIERA

CONDITION:

Some customers may comment on a smell of overheated plastic, and the Service Engine Soon (SES) light may be on.

NOTE:
Canadian Oldsmobile Ciera's do not use the "SES" letters on the warning lamp. They use an international symbol of an engine (see Owner's Manual).

CAUSE:

The engine wire harness, under certain build conditions, may contact the exhaust pipe shield. The heat may melt through the wire harness conduit, and sometimes through the wire insulation, causing a short in an engine control circuit. A production change was incorporated after the following VIN's to eliminate this condition.

R6408523 Buick - Oklahoma City

RS601859 Buick - Ramos

R6311169 Oldsmobile - Oklahoma City

CORRECTION:

Repair the wire harness as needed. Add a tie strap, at least 14" long, in the area shown, to prevent the wire harness from touching the shield. P/N 12355068, or equivalent, can be used.
