Hub, Bearing & Seal

FRONT HUB, BEARING AND SEAL

Hub and bearing are replaced as an assembly. Refer to Fig. 1 during service procedure.
1. Loosen hub nut with vehicle on ground.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheel.
3. Install drive axle seal protectors. These protectors should be used any time service is performed on or near drive axle. Failure to use them may result in interior joint or seal damage.
4. Remove, then discard hub nut and washer.
5. Remove brake caliper from support and suspend caliper from frame with a length of wire. Do not suspend caliper by the brake hose. Remove rotor.
6. Using tool No. J-28733, or equivalent, separate hub and drive axle.
7. Remove hub and bearing attaching bolts, then shield, hub and bearing assembly and O-ring.
8. To remove factory seal, tap seal toward engine. When seal is removed from steering knuckle, cut it off drive axle using side cutters. Factory seal is installed from engine side of steering knuckle. Replacement seal is installed from wheel side of steering knuckle.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Lubricate seal, then install using seal installer tool No. J-28671, or equivalent.
b. Tighten bolts/nuts to specifications.
