When the gear selector lever is moved to the DRIVE RANGE (D), the manual valve (404) allows line pressure to enter the D-3 passage. D-3 fluid is then directed to the 3-4 shift valve (362) and moves the valve against "A" shift solenoid pressure. D-3 fluid is also sent to the 2-3 shift valve (357) where it enters the input clutch feed passage. Input clutch feed fluid passes through the 3-4 shift valve (362) into the input clutch passage, seats No. 3 checkball (372) against the PRN passage and applies the input clutch. 4th clutch apply fluid at the 4th clutch, is directed through the 3-4 accumulator assembly (421-428) to the No. 10 checkball (372). Exhausting 4th clutch fluid seats the No. 10 checkball (372) against the 4th passage directing fluid through an exhaust orifice up to the 3-4 shift valve (362) where it exhausts. 4th fluid pressure at the 4th clutch discrete switch (218) also exhausts at the 3-4 shift valve (362) allowing the switch to open and signal the PCM that the transaxle is no longer operating in 4th gear.
Since D-3 fluid overrides "A" shift solenoid fluid at the 3-4 shift valve (362), a manual 4-3 downshift will result even if "A" shift solenoid is "energized" or turned on" (Drive Range Fourth Gear solenoid state is "A" shift solenoid on and "B" shift solenoid off). If the PCM receives the appropriate input signals from the VS Sensor and TP Sensor, "A" shift solenoid will "de-energize" or "turn off' and "A" shift solenoid fluid will then exhaust through the solenoid.
Manual Valve (404): Is moved by the gear selector lever and allows line pressure to enter the D-3 passage.
2-3 Shift Valve (357): Allows D-3 fluid to enter the input clutch feed passage and directs it to the 3-4 shift valve (362).
3-4 Shift Valve (362): Is downshifted when D-3 fluid is fed to the valve. In this position input clutch feed fluid enters the input clutch passage.
No. 3 Checkball (372): Located in the channel plate (400), it is seated against the PRN passage allowing input clutch fluid to apply the input clutch.
No. 10 Checkball (372): Located in the valve body (300), it is seated against 4th fluid allowing 4th clutch fluid to exhaust at the 3-4 shift valve.
4th Clutch Discrete Switch (218): "Opens" a circuit to the PCM to signal that the transaxle is no longer operating in Overdrive Range - Fourth Gear.
"A" Shift Solenoid (315): When de-energized, it allows "A" shift solenoid fluid from the 3-4 shift valve (362) to exhaust through the solenoid. However, this event does not have to occur in order to achieve a manual 4-3 downshift.
NOTE: When a Manual Third Gear Range is selected (from Overdrive Range Fourth Gear) 4th fluid pressure at the 4th clutch discrete switch (218) exhausts allowing the switch to open. The PCM senses this change in vehicle operation and releases the [1][2]torque converter clutch to help eliminate harsh manual D4 to D3 downshifts. The torque converter clutch will re-apply after the PCM senses that normal Third Gear operating conditions (such as vehicle speed, throttle position, etc.) have once again been met.
