When the gear selector lever is moved to the MANUAL FIRST RANGE (1), the manual valve (404) allows line pressure to enter the lo passage. Lo fluid pressure is sent to the lo discrete switch (218), closes it thereby completing the circuit from the PCM to ground. Lo fluid pressure is also sent to No. 7 checkball (372) which seats against the lo-1st fluid passage. Based on PCM input signals from the VS Sensor, TP Sensor, lo discrete switch (218), and lo-1st lockout speed calibration, "A" shift solenoid is "energized" or "turned on" allowing line pressure to enter the "A" shift solenoid passage. "A" shift solenoid fluid then holds the 1-2 shift valve (318) and is also directed to the 3-4 shift valve (362).

The second clutch is released by 2nd clutch apply fluid exhausting to the No. 2 checkball (372), forcing it through the exhaust orifice into the 2nd fluid passage. 2nd fluid is then directed through the 1-2 shift valve (318) and into the 3rd fluid passage where it exhausts at the 2-3 shift valve (357). Simultaneously, lo fluid is directed through the 1-2 shift valve (318) into the lo-1st fluid passage. Lo-1st fluid is sent to the pressure regulator valve (313) to boost line pressure and at the same time to the lo blow off valve (407). Lo-1st fluid also seats No. 4 checkball (372) against the 3rd clutch passage and directs the fluid into the 3rd clutch/lo-1st passage to apply the 3rd clutch.

Manual Valve (404): Is moved by the gear selector lever and allows line pressure to enter the lo fluid passage.

Lo Discrete Switch (218): A normally open switch that closes when lo fluid pressure is fed from the manual valve (404). When the switch is closed it completes the circuit from the PCM to ground and provides information to the PCM that the gear selector lever has been moved to Manual First Gear Range.

No. 7 Checkball (372): Located in the valve body (300), directs lo fluid to the 1-2 shift valve (318).

1-2 Shift Valve (318): When shifted against spring force, allows lo fluid to enter the lo-1st passage to the pressure regulator valve (313). During release of the 2nd clutch, exhausting 2nd fluid passes through the valve and enters the 3rd fluid passage.

Pressure Regulator Valve (313): Boosts line pressure using lo-1st fluid pressure.

Lo Blow Off Valve (407): A pressure relief valve that will exhaust excess lo fluid pressures above 448 kPa (65 psi) in the 3rd clutch apply circuit.

No. 4 Checkball (372): Located in the channel plate (400), it seats against 3rd clutch fluid allowing lo-1st fluid to enter the 3rd clutch fluid passage and apply the 3rd clutch.

"A" Shift Solenoid (315): Energizes, allowing line pressure to feed into the "A" shift solenoid passage and to the 3-4 shift valve (357).

No. 2 Checkball (372): Located in the channel plate (400), forces exhausting 2nd clutch apply fluid through an orifice into the 2nd clutch passage and to the 1-2 shift valve (318).

NOTE: The transaxle will shift to Manual First Gear Range only when the following conditions have been met:

^ Manual First Gear Range is selected

^ Solenoid state is operating for First Gear ("A" Shift Solenoid and "B" Shift Solenoid - ON)

^ Lo Discrete Switch provides ground to PCM

^ Vehicle speed is below 56 km/h (35 mph)
