Thread Repair Instructions






^ Tools Required - J 39345 Thread Repair Kit, or equivalent.

WARNING: Wear safety glasses In order to avoid eye damage.

NOTE: Refer to the kit manufacturer's instructions regarding the size of the drill and tap to use.

CAUTION: Avoid any build up of chips. Back out the tap every few turns and remove the chips.

1. Determine the size, the pitch, and the depth of the damaged thread. If necessary, adjust the stop collars on the cutting tool and tap to the required depth.
2. Drill out the damaged thread using the correct drill size. Drill through or to original depth.
3. Tap the hole to original depth.
4. Clean the hole. Using compressed air, blow any chips out of the hole. Do not let any chips blow into the engine.
5. Thread the Heli-Coil insert onto the mandrel of the installer. Engage the tang of the insert onto the end of the mandrel.

NOTE: The top of the insert must be 1/4 to 1/2 turn below the surface.

6. Install the insert.
7. Remove the tang. The tang must be removed to allow passage of the fastener through the insert. After installation, place the square end of a punch on the tang. Strike the punch sharply with a hammer. The tang will break off at the notch.
8. Clean the hole. Using compressed air, blow any chips out of the hole. Do not let any chips blow into the engine.
