Technician Safety Information

WARNING: This vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR). Refer to Cautions In Supplemental Inflatable (SIR) System under On-Vehicle Service and the SIR Component and Wiring Location view In Supplemental Inflatable (SIR) System before performing service on or around SIR components or wiring. Failure to follow Cautions could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury, or otherwise unneeded SIR system repairs.

NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener -in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application.

The applicable service procedure will identify, where necessary, those fasteners that must be replaced after removal; or those fasteners that require the use of thread locking compound or thread sealant.

UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and the joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener.

When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications.

Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.

NOTICE: Always re-attach the fuel lines and fuel filter with all original type fasteners and hardware.

WARNING:
Adhere to the following procedures any time the fuel system is being worked on in order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury
:

1. Place a "CAUTION FLAMMABLE" sign in the work area.
2. Always wear eye protection.
3. Use caution when working near the catalytic converter to prevent the possibility of burns or fire. The temperatures within the converter can exceed 537°C (1000°F).
4. Always relieve the fuel system pressure prior to disconnecting fuel system components. For the fuel pressure release procedure, refer to Service and Repair.
5. Always disconnect the negative battery cable except for those tests where battery voltage is required.
6. Always keep a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher near the work area.
7. Use a suitable container to store or catch spilled fuel.
8. Do not replace fuel pipe with fuel hose.
9. Plug all disconnected line fittings or hoses.
10. After making any fuel system repairs ALWAYS inspect for fuel leaks by turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position for two seconds, then to the "OFF" position for ten seconds. Again turn to the "ON" position and then check for leaks.
