EEPROM Programming

The PCM contains a data storage unit which saves data even when battery power is removed. This unit, the Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) retains calibration data specific to the vehicle into which the PCM is installed. A service PCM will not contain data and must be programmed. If a PCM is being installed from another vehicle, the PCM must be re-programmed with the correct data for this vehicle. The EEPROM can be programmed using Techline equipment.

NOTE: Maintain the normal system voltage during the entire PCM programming process. PCM damage can occur If programming is interrupted due to incorrect system voltage. Refer to the Techline equipment user instructions for the proper vehicle set-up procedures before programming.

PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE
1. Perform the following procedures before programming:
^ Set up the vehicle so that normal system voltage is maintained throughout the programming process.
^ Turn the key to On leaving the engine off. Turn off ALL accessories.
^ Open a window and run the programming cable out of the vehicle.
^ Make sure that the cable connection at the DLC is secure.
^ Close the vehicle's doors.
^ Operate the programming equipment from outside the vehicle.
^ Do not operate ANY vehicle system during the programming process.
2. Program the PCM using the latest calibration software. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.
3. If the PCM fails to program, proceed as follows:
^ Ensure that all PCM and DLC connections are OK.
^ Check if the Techline equipment is running the latest operating software.
^ Make sure that the calibration part number is correct for the vehicle.
^ Attempt to program the PCM. If the PCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the PCM. You must program the replacement PCM.
