Transfer Case - RTV Silicone Sealant Usage Precaution

Bulletin No.: 05-04-21-001

Date: March 08, 2005

INFORMATION

Subject:
Information on Excessive Use of RTV Silicone Sealant on New Venture Gear (NVG) and Borg Warner Transfer Cases During Service

Models:
2005 and Prior Light Duty Trucks

with Four Wheel Drive (4WD) or All Wheel Drive (AWD) and NVG or Borg Warner Transfer Case

Previously repaired transfer cases that were returned and reviewed at the Warranty Parts Center (WPC) indicate excessive use of RTV silicone on the case halves during field service assembly.

Important:
^ Excessive use of RTV silicone during field service assembly may result in bearing failure.

^ DO NOT apply RTV silicone to both case halves during assembly.

^ ONLY apply RTV silicone to the rear case half as indicated in the Unit Repair Manual.

^ DO NOT apply a bead of silicone in EXCESS of 3 mm (1/8 in) to the rear case half.

Excessive use of RTV between the transfer case halves during field service assembly may cause the oil pickup screen to become plugged. This may result in a transfer case bearing failure due to lack of proper lubrication.

ONLY apply a 3 mm (1/8 in) bead of sealant, GM P/N 12345739 (Canadian P/N 10953541), or equivalent, onto the rear case half during assembly as shown above. Refer to the Unit Repair Manual for additional information.

Failure to follow these sealant guidelines during assembly may result in a repeat repair and a dissatisfied customer.
