Engine - Timing Cover Replacement

Subject: TIMING COVER REPLACEMENT ON 1981-82 AND EARLY 83 505 AND 604 TURBO DIESEL MODELS (XD2S ENGINE)
Whenever the replacement of a timing cover P/N 0318.77 is required on a Turbo Diesel engine 505 or 604 vehicle, the following parts will also have to be replaced:
Note: Prior to re-installing a previously used lightweight pulley, check that the contact surfaces are free of burrs - replace pulley that shows evidence of wear.
Location of Air Deflector and Mounting Points
Warning: Installation of the air deflector is mandatory on vehicles to be equipped with the 360 mm diameter fan.
(1) Deflector Mounting Point: Bolt P/N 6917.15 Washer P/N 6948.32
Nut P/N 6935.09
(2) Existing Lower Radiator Mounts
Revised Diesel Timing Cover Fanshaft Torquing Procedure
On all timing covers currently supplied by N.P.D. under P/N 0318.77. the fanshaft keyway has been eliminated and a hex head (10 mm. across flats) has been added to the shaft.
When installing this new timing cover, use a new 22 mm across flat fan hub nut and torque it to 8 daN-m (58 ft.lbs.).
Torquing Procedure:
- Tools required: ^ beam or reversible type torque wrench
^ 10 mm, 6 point socket
^ 22 mm, offset box wrench
- Install timing cover on engine.
- Install fan pulley and hub onto fanshaft.
- Apply Loctite P/N 9730.66 or locally available equivalent on-Lo fan hub nut.
- Hand tighten fan hub nut (1) P/N 6934.21.
- Using a 22 mm offset box wrench, hold fan hub nut (1) while torquing the fanshaft hex head (2) in a counterclockwise direction to 8 daN-m (58 ft.lbs.).
604 Auxiliary Fan Wiring
On 1982 604 Turbo Diesel vehicles from V.I.N 0100001 to 0100846, ensure that the auxiliary fan wiring modification has been performed as per Service Bulletin No. 066.
The modifications covered in this Service Bulletin have been introduced in production as of the following serial numbers:
