Distributor: Service and Repair


1. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is on compression stroke and timing mark on balancer is aligned with 8° before TDC mark on timing plate, then disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove distributor cap and disconnect vacuum lines from distributor.
3. Scribe a mark between distributor body and engine indicating position of body, then mark position of rotor on distributor body.
4. Remove hold-down bolt or clamp and the distributor.
5. Note position of slot in distributor drive shaft.
6. When installing distributor, ensure that timing marks and distributor drive shaft are in positions noted during removal, align marks previously made on distributor body, engine and rotor, then install distributor and hold-down bolt or clamp.
7. Check engine timing and adjust if necessary.
