SUBJECT: WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS FOR PEUGEOT VEHICLES
We would like to draw your attention to possible discrepancies in toe-in adjustments for Peugeot vehicles due to the different standards of measurement utilized in the USA.
A) American wheel alignment equipment is designed to the SAE standards J670e (of 1952) which is based on the use of a theoretical tire diameter of 28.56 inches. As a result, the equipment gives toe-in readings in mm or fractions of inches independently of the actual diameter of the wheel being measured.
B) Peugeot toe-in values are based on the measurement across the rim diameter which varies according to vehicle type. Peugeot vehicles currently marketed in the U.S. are fitted with 14" or 15" rims; in other words approximately 50% of the size of the SAE standard wheel. This can cause measured toe error of 50% if the readings are incorrectly interpreted (Insufficent Toe-In).
The Golden Rule to remember in case of doubt is to use the toe-in value measured or given in minutes of a degree. This angle (as for caster and camber) is always the same whatever the diameter of the wheel or type of equipment used.
Reference to the two scales used on electronic alignment equipment immediately shows the commonality of the minutes of degree scales and the divergence of mm and inch scales for the two systems. See scales

Example: If you measure a correctly adjusted 505 STX for toe-in specification which, according to the Workshop Manual is 3 mm +/- 1 (for a 15" wheel equals 25 minutes) on U.S. equipment, the minute scale will give the true value. However, since most adjustments are made using the more common mm or inch scales, the toe-in would read 5 mm, which the operator would then inadvertently readjust to 3 mm, reducing actual toe-in to less than minimum standards.
TOE-IN SCALES FOR READING TOTAL TOE
1. EUROPEAN SCALE - To be used in conjunction with conversation table on page 3.
2. U.S. SCALE - To be used with toe-in in inches based on SAE standards of 28.56 wheel.
The only scales which remain constant between European and U.S versions are the scales which read in minutes of a degree.
