Wheel Hub: Service and Repair


1. Raise and support rear of vehicle and remove wheel.
2. Disconnect brake hose from suspension arm and remove stub axle.
3. Remove brake caliper and secure aside.
4. Remove 4 bolts securing stub axle carrier to suspension arm.
5. Remove hub, rotor, stub axle and drive axle as an assembly, taking care not to stress CV joints.
6. Press stub axle from hub using suitable bearing separators.
7. Remove hub from stub axle carrier using press or suitable puller.
8. Mark position of rotor, remove bolts and separate hub from rotor.
9. On models with second design hub, remove bearing inner race from hub using suitable puller, then remove seal.
10. On all models, reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On models with second design hub, position inner race in stub axle carrier, then press new seal into carrier until seal is fully seated against shoulder of carrier.
b. On all models, assemble rotor on hub aligning matching marks, apply suitable thread locking compound, then evenly torque retaining bolts to 27 ft. lbs. in crossing pattern.
c. Secure drive axle assembly in vise, mount hub assembly on stub axle and install new retaining nut, torque nut to 43.5 ft. lbs., then stake nut to stub axle.
d. Torque stub axle carrier bolts to 36 ft. lbs. and caliper mounting bolts to 31 ft. lbs.
