A/C - CFC 12 Replacement

BULLETIN NO. 449

DATE:
JUNE 1992

SUBJECT:
CFC-12 REPLACEMENTS FOR AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

MODELS:
ALL PEUGEOT VEHICLES

SUPPLEMENT TO SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 416 DATED MAY, 1991

We have received information from the Mobile Air Conditioning Society that certain chemicals and/or chemical blends are currently being offered for sale to replace CFC-12.

These alleged "drop-in" replacement items are not compatible with current designs of CFC-12 automotive air conditioning systems and can cause system failures, and, in some cases, can become flammable or combustible.

The replacement chemicals and blends are also incompatible with the current designs of automotive air conditioning recovery and recycling equipment. Refrigerants, chemicals or blends may be drawn into the recycling equipment that is being used to service a CFC-12 air conditioning system. This will not only result in problems for the equipment, but also will transmit the contaminated refrigerant to other vehicles being serviced.

The Mobile Air Conditioning Society is asking the E.P.A. to give them, the S.A.E., and the industry the time to conduct studies, evaluate the various choices, and develop a retrofit program that will meet the goals of the Clean Air Act, and properly protect human health and welfare and the environment.

WARNING:
UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, DO NOT USE ANY "DROP-IN" REPLACEMENTS FOR CFC-12.
