SUBJECT: DIAGNOSIS OF ALTERNATOR AND STARTER PROBLEMS

MODELS: All gas and diesel vehicles

COMPLAINT: No start condition, engine does not crank over

CAUSE: Insufficient battery voltage, may be diagnosed as a defective alternator (no output) when checking as per procedure in S.B. No. 252, Class 12.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This condition has been traced to a poor electrical contact due to insufficient tightening of the battery cable (#21) and alternator wires (#4 or 4A) at mounting point to the starter solenoid terminal (B+).

- Make sure that cable terminals are fully pushed onto starter solenoid

- Tighten 1.3 mm hex head nut for B+ terminals on starter solenoid

- Check tightness of 10 mm hex head nut for B+ terminals on alternator
