Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery cables and remove air duct between fuel metering distributor and throttle body.
2. Remove upper and lower radiator mounts and fan shroud.
3. Place sheet of cardboard between radiator core and fan.
4. Disconnect kickdown control cable at throttle body.
5. Disconnect front exhaust pipe support at transmission bracket, rear muffler support at propeller shaft tube bracket, tail pipe support at differential bracket, and the exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
6. Remove vibration damper, if equipped, and disconnect differential mounts.
7. Support propeller shaft tube on rear crossmember.
8. Disconnect steering coupling flange.
9. Replace one bolt at each end of crossmember with long bolt 8.1511 C. Screw fully in.
10. Remove 2 remaining bolts and lower front crossmember about 2 inches by unscrewing long bolts.
11. Drain transmission and disconnect fluid cooler lines.
12. Remove starter and transmission dipstick tube.
13. Remove bellhousing cover plate.
14. Remove 4 torque converter bolts.
15. Lock flywheel ring gear using lock 8.0144 B or 8.0110 J.
16. Secure torque converter.
17. Place suitable jack under transmission.
18. Remove 4 bolts securing propeller shaft tube to transmission.
19. Separate engine and transmission about 1 inch and insert retainer plate 8.0403 SZ. Secure plate with two M10 150 screws 20 mm long.
20. Pull propeller shaft tube and differential assembly rearward and allow assembly to rest on rear crossmember.
21. Disconnect shift linkage, transmission switch wiring and speedometer cable.
22. Lower jack to tilt transmission as far down as possible.
23. Using suitable engine lifting equipment, raise front of engine to pivot it as far rearward as engine mounts will allow.
24. Remove bellhousing bolts and the transmission.
25. Reverse procedure to install.
