Timing Belt: Service and Repair

Engine Timing Belt, Remove / Reinstall

Removal






1. Remove:
right mudshield
air conditioning compressor belt
alternator belt
upper timing belt cover
2. Turn engine using crankshaft pulley bolt to align holes for pin insertion.
Lock camshaft at (a) using pin 0.0163






(b) : hole for pin in seal plate.
3. Lock crankshaft at (b) using pin 0.0163
Remove the pins.






4. Remove lower flywheel cover.
5. Lock flywheel with a flywheel stop P.N. 91.86 (J 36358) from E2 Engine Kit (91.A6)
6. Remove crankshaft pulley
7. Remove flywheel stop






8. Remove in order

9. Loosen without removing
nuts (3)
nut (4) of tensioner (5)
10. Turn tensioner (5) (6 mm square) and position it in such a way that spring (6) is compressed to its maximum (cam in horizontal position)
11. Tighten nut (4)
12. Remove belt without folding it.

Install






1. Lock camshaft at (a) using pin 0.0163






(b) hole for pin in seal plate.
2. Clean nose of crankshaft, threaded hole, pulley and bolt.
3. Reinstall pulley and key (do not tighten bolt)
4. Lock crankshaft at (b) using pin 0.0163
5. Remove crankshaft pulley.
6. Install belt in the following order
camshaft pinion
timing gear pinion
water pump pinion
tensioner






7. Loosen nut (1)
8. Turn tensioner square to release spring (cam (2) pointing down)
9. Remove locking pins.
10. Re-tighten nuts (1) and (3).
11. Rotate crankshaft two turns in the direction of engine rotation.
12. Bring engine to TDC (N0 1 cylinder valves open).
13. Loosen nuts (1) and (3) to release tensioner.
14. Tighten nuts (3) and (1) to 11 ft lbs.
15. Reinstall pins 0.0163 and check pin alignment.

Note:Repeat procedure if necessary.






16. Install in order
covers (4) and (5)
crankshaft pulley with key.
17. Lock flywheel using tool P.N. 91.86
18. Coat bolt (6) with LOCTITE and tighten to 81 ft lbs
19. Remove flywheel locking tool.
20. Reinstall
