Ignition Timing: Adjustments

Ignition Timing Marks:

1. Warm the engine up to normal operating temperature.
2. Stop the engine.
3. Be sure that the throttle plate is closed.
4. Connect a timing light to the #1 cylinder high tension lead.
5. Start the engine.
6. Adjust the idle speed to (900 -950 manual transmission) (950 - 1000 automatic transmission). Refer to "Idle Speed Adjustment".
7. Align the TDC crank pulley notch with the 10° mark on the timing plate. Loosen the locking bolt and adjust the distributor accordingly.
8. Recheck the idle speed and readjust if necessary.

NOTE: The single mark on the crank pulley is TDC. The double mark on the crank pulley is 22°

Checking The Timing Advance

1. Be sure to set the initial timing correctly as described above.
2. Connect a timing light to the #1 cylinder high tension lead.

60C Thermocontact Location:

3. Remove the two wires on the 60°C thermocontact and connect them together.

Throttle Plate Adjustment:

4. Hold the microswitch on the throttle plate housing closed.
5. Run the engine at a speed between 1600 and 1900 RPM.
6. Using the dephaser on the timing light, bring the crank pulley TDC mark in line with the 0° mark on the timing plate. The advance should be between 23° and 28°.
7. If the advance is incorrect, repeat steps 1 - 6 using a new ignition ECU.
