Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery and remove fan shroud.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove front exhaust pipe and disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector.
4. Remove catalytic converter heat shield and air injection hose.
5. Remove front seat track floor brace from under vehicle.
6. Remove rear tail pipe brackets and differential mounting bolts.
7. Mark position of steering shaft coupling and disconnect.
8. Replace one bolt at each end of front crossmember with bolt No 81511-C or equivalent, and thread.

9. Remove remaining crossmember bolts and lower crossmember about 2 inches (50mm) by alternately loosening the 2 long bolts No. 81511-C or equivalent, Fig. 5.
10. Place a jack under transmission and remove torque tube bolts.

11. Separate torque tube from transmission by about .8 inch (20mm) and insert plate No. 80403-SZ or equivalent, Fig. 6. Disengage transmission output shaft.
12. Remove front mount of gear selector rod. Disconnect shifting link rod, selector link rod, back-up light switch wire and speedometer cable.
13. Remove inspection plates from bellhousing.
14. Remove clutch slave cylinder circlip and flexible hose bracket.
15. Lower jack to tilt transmission as far as possible. Support engine at front with engine hoist using hook tools No. 80102-G and E or equivalent.
16. Remove bellhousing and starter bolts.
17. Pull back, turn, and lower transmission from vehicle.
18. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.
