Emission Maintenance Reminder (EMR) Light

This output device is located in the instrument panel, and its purpose is to inform the driver that the vehicle requires scheduled maintenance for certain emission system components. The SBEC illuminates this lamp at certain mileage intervals. The controller keeps track of the vehicle mileage by monitoring the vehicle distance (speed) sensor. The EMR Lamp illuminates at 60,000 mi, 82,500 mi, and 120,000 mi.

The EMR light can ONLY be reset through the use of a SCAN TOOL. If the engine controller is replaced, the current mileage of the vehicle needs to be entered into the EMR memory. For more instruction refer to Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Procedures.

The manufacturer recommends performing the following procedures at these intervals:

60,000 miles
Replace EGR Valve
Replace EGR Tube (if equipped)
Clean EGR passage
Replace PCV Valve

82,500 miles
Replace Oxygen Sensor

120,000 miles
Replace EGR Valve
Replace EGR Tube (if equipped)
Clean EGR passage
Replace PCV Valve

EMR MILEAGE RESET

If Single Module Engine Controller (SMEC) or Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC) is replaced, vehicle mileage must be programmed back into the SMEC/SBEC. If the following procedure is not performed, EMR light will not turn on at the proper mileage intervals to coincide with current vehicle mileage.

1. Using DRB-II Tester, select EMISSIONS EMR TESTS. Select EMR MEMORY CHECK. DRB-II display will read, EMR MEMORY CHECK ARE YOU SURE? YES, NO. Press the YES key.
2. DRB-II display will read, READING ENGINE DATA, WRITE TEST 1, WRITE TEST 2, WRITING ENGINE DATA, EMR: MILEAGE INVALID. DO YOU WANT TO CORRECT EMR MILEAGE? Press YES or NO key. Display will read, IS INSTRUMENT PANEL MILEAGE BETWEEN XXXXXX AND XXXXXX? If odometer mileage on vehicle is within specification, press the YES key. The DRB-II will display EMR MEMORY CHECK TEST COMPLETE.
NOTE: DRB-II may display EMR MEMORY WRITE FAILURE or EMR MEMORY CHECK WRITE REFUSED if there is a problem with SMEC/SBEC.
3. If the odometer mileage on vehicle is not within specification shown on DRB-II, press NO key on DRB-II. DRB-II will read DO YOU WANT TO CORRECT EMR MILEAGE? Press the YES key on the DRB-II. DRB-II will display ENTER MILEAGE SHOWN ON INSTRUMENT PANEL. USE ENTER KEY TO END.
4. Enter mileage shown on instrument panel. Do not enter tenths. Press the ENTER key on the DRB-II. DRB-II will ask for verification of entry. If the mileage entry was correct, DRB-II will display SETTING ENGINE DATA and EMR MEMORY CHECK TEST COMPLETE. Vehicle must be driven for at least 8 miles for mileage reset to take place.
