Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Intermittents

SYMPTOM DESCRIPTION:

Occurs occasionally, and is unpredictable.

May or may not turn on Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), (previously called the Check Engine Lamp or CEL), or store a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

COMMON CAUSES

Most intermittents are caused by faulty electrical connections or wiring.

CIRCUIT INSPECTION

All connector terminals in problem circuit should be carefully inspected and reformed or replaced as needed to insure proper contact tension. Look for:

- Connector mating.
- Terminals backed out of connector body.
- Deformed or damaged terminals.
- Poor terminal to wire connection. (This requires removing terminals from the connector body).

ROAD TEST

If a visual/physical check does not find the cause of the problem, drive vehicle while monitoring the suspect circuit with a scan tool or voltmeter.

An abnormal voltage, when the problem occurs, indicates the problem may be in that circuit.

NOTE: Record stored codes and clear memory before road testing, to eliminate unrelated codes.
