Engagement chatter, chatters on shifts
A chatter during the drive engagement and/or during shifts is usually caused by a problem in:
1. The friction material.
2. The surface condition of the steel plates.
3. The type of ATF.
To Avoid this problem:
1. Make sure you use friction plates that meet OE specifications.
2. Use new steel plates (or used plate that have been tumbled or sanded with 320 grit or finer emery cloth.
3. Use Chrysler 7176 ATF only. You can buy it from Chrysler by the quart or gallon. Quart - # 4467721 Gallon - # 4467722
NOTE 1:
This information does not account for assembly errors, worn parts or leaks which can also cause chatters during break-away and upshifts.
Note 2:
Using the wrong type of ATF can also result in torque converter clutch apply chatter.
