DISCUSSION

Before working on a flooded engine, it is important to check the level and the contents of the engine crankcase. If there is fuel in the crankcase, the oil and the filter must be changed before attempting any repairs on the flooded engine.


NOTE: Flooded engines may create a potentially hazardous situation. Keep all flames, sparks and high heat sources away from flooded engines. When draining oil contaminated by fuel, make sure the vehicle is located in a safe, well ventilated area. Dispose of the crankcase contents in a safe, responsible and environmentally approved manner.


Because of the possibility of raw fuel coming out of the spark plug holes when cranking a flooded engine after the spark plugs have been removed, the ignition system must be disabled to reduce the possibility of a spark causing ignition of the raw fuel.

The ignition systems may be disabled as follows:

^ On vehicles equipped with distributors, disconnect the coil wire from the distributor cap and then ground the coil wire by using a jumper wire.
^ On vehicles equipped with distributorless ignition systems, unhook the primary circuit connector from the coil pack.
