Clutch Assembly

REMOVAL OR REPLACEMENT

Fig. 1 Clutch front plate removal:





1. Remove drive belt from pulley and disconnect field coil wiring.
2. Use a suitable spanner wrench to hold clutch hub, remove retaining nut.
3. Place a suitable puller over end of shaft, install three bolts into the holes in clutch hub, and pull hub from shaft.
4. Remove shaft key and shims from compressor shaft.

5. Remove external snap ring then install suitable rotor pulley puller into rotor cavity so that lips on puller jaws engage snap ring groove. Remove rotor pulley from compressor.
6. Remove snap ring retaining field coil, then pull coil assembly from compressor housing.

INSTALLATION

1. Align tab on back of field coil with recess in compressor housing and install snap ring. Lead wire from coil must be routed directly to retaining clip on top of housing.
2. Install rotor pulley assembly onto compressor using a suitable tool then install snap ring.
3. Install shims previously removed.
4. Install a new shaft key.
5. Install clutch front plate by pressing over the shaft onto hub until it bottoms on shims.
6. Install new shaft nut, Torque to 25-30 ft. lbs.

7. Check air between front plate and rotor pulley. Air gap should be 0.016-0.031 inch. If not, change shims with shims of a different thickness as required.
