NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 18-07-92 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THE 1990 (AL) OMNI/HORIZON MODEL HAS BEEN ADDED.

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES ONLY TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.2L OR 2.5L TBI ENGINE AND A MANUAL TRANSAXLE.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Vehicles may exhibit intermittent erratic idle speeds. This condition will most likely occur after decelerating from a steady cruising speed.


DIAGNOSIS:

Before proceeding to the repair procedure, verify that the idle speed control system is functioning properly as outlined in the appropriate diagnostic procedures manual.


PARTS REQUIRED:

1 Motor, Idle Air Control (Automatic Idle Speed) 4612453



REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor with a revised motor.

1. Remove the IAC Motor and O-ring as outlined in the appropriate service manual.


NOTE:
IF DIFFICULTY IS EXPERIENCED WHEN REMOVING THE IAC MOTOR ATTACHING SCREWS, REFER TO THE FOLLOWING ATTACHING SCREW REMOVAL PROCEDURE.


2. Install the new IAC Motor and O-ring, PN 4612453, as outlined in the service manual.


ATTACHING SCREW REMOVAL PROCEDURE


PARTS REQUIRED:

1 Gasket, Throttle Body 4324411


NOTE:
THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD BE USED IF THE TORQUE REQUIRED TO REMOVE THE IAC MOTOR ATTACHING SCREWS EXCEEDS 50 INCHPOUNDS. ATTACHING SCREWS MAY BREAK IF MORE THAN 50 INCH-POUNDS OF TORQUE IS APPLIED.


1. Using the procedure outlined in the appropriate service manual, remove the throttle body from the intake manifold.

2. Using a 1000 watt heat gun, heat the IAC attaching screw heads and thread area of the throttle body for one minute. This will soften the thread sealant used on these screws.


NOTE:
DIRECT THE HEAT AWAY FROM PLASTIC COMPONENTS.


3. Remove the IAC screws using the correct torx head tool.

4. Install the throttle body using a new gasket and torque to 175 inch-pounds.

TIME ALLOWANCE:

IAC Motor - Replace 14-30-23-94 0.3 Hrs.
