Service Procedure

1. Place the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.

2. With the ignition switch in the OFF position, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for two (2) minutes for the Airbag Electronic Control Module (AECM) reserve capacitor to discharge.

Note:
To enhance customer satisfaction, remember to record all radio settings before disconnecting the battery and to reset all electronic memory (clock, radio settings, etc.) when you have completed the service procedure.

3. Remove the four air bag module retaining nuts from the back side of the steering wheel.

4. Disconnect the air bag module electrical connector and set the air bag module aside.

5. Disconnect the horn wire and speed control switch wire (if equipped).

6. Remove and discard the steering wheel retaining nut.





7. Inspect the steering wheel armature hub area for cracks as shown in Figure 1.





8. ^ If no cracks are found, install the provided anti-separation plate as shown in Figure 2.

^ If any cracks are found around the hub area, replace the steering wheel with the steering wheel listed in the Parts section.

NOTE:
The anti-separation plate is not required if the steering wheel is replaced.

9. Install the provided steering wheel retaining nut. Torque to 45 ft-lbs (61 N.m).

10. Connect the horn wire and speed control switch wire (if equipped).

11. Connect the air bag module electrical connector and install the air bag module.

12. Install the air bag module retaining nuts and tighten to 90 in-lbs (10 N.m).

13. Turn the ignition key to the ON position.

14. Check to see that no one is inside the vehicle and then connect the negative battery cable.

15. From the passenger side of the vehicle, turn the ignition key to the OFF position and then back to the ON position.

16. Observe the instrument panel air bag lamp. It should go on for six to eight seconds and then go out indicating that the system is functioning normally.

NOTE:
If the air bag lamp either fails to light, or goes on and stays on, there is a system malfunction. Refer to the Passive Restraint Diagnostic Test Manual to diagnose and repair the problem.
