SUBJECT: Pre-Delivery/Recall Campaign JM

Check Front Brake Hose


Gentlemen:

This is to notify you of the initiation of a pre-delivery/ recall campaign involving 1982 model Porsche 928 vehicles within the following vehicle identification number range:


WPO JAO 92_CS 820 050 --- WPO JAO 92_CS 820 497


It is possible that on some of the vehicles the front brake hose may have been improperly routed. If this happened the hose could rub against the rim at certain wheel positions. All involved vehicles must therefore be checked and corrected, where necessary.


Customer Notification

VWoA will notify all known owners directly via first class mail on September 10, 1982, as per attached copy.

Vehicle Allocation Information

VWoA will mail to each dealer involved a computerized print-out containing vehicle identification numbers as well as owner names and addresses, where applicable, of vehicles which are located within the dealers vicinity and which must be checked and corrected.


Dealer Campaign Responsibility

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to the campaign regard-less of mileage, age of vehicle, ownership or selling dealer.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle which is subject to a product safety or compliance recall must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered the vehicle for repair. A failure to adequately repair the vehicle within 60 days after tender of the vehicle 15 prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. A dissatisfied owner may also petition the NHTSA and request a hearing under Section 156 of the Safety Act. Such a hearing could result in an order to either properly repair the vehicle, replace it with an identical or reasonable equivalent vehicle, or to refund the purchase price In full less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

It is, therefore, imperative that you make every effort to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner in order to repair the vehicle as soon as possible.

In accordance with instructions, the owner may contact Volkswagen of America, Inc. in seeking assistance or, if he wishes, may write to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.


Inventory Vehicles


It is equally important, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is in or taken into your inventory, that the campaign be performed prior to selling the vehicle. Section 108 of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act prohibits the sale of a new motor vehicle if the selling dealer is aware it does not comply with applicable regulations.

Consequently, should you sell any of the affected vehicles without first performing the campaign correction, your dealership may be subject to a civil penalty of up to $1,00O.00 for each such sale.








Administrative Procedure Charts


Campaign Completion Identification

A pre-printed Porsche recall campaign completion sticker bearing the campaign code JM and supplied to you by VWoA must be completed with a typewriter or an unerasable marking pen and affixed to the left front door jamb. Please make sure that the area is cleaned and dry prior to attaching the label.

All personnel in your dealership connected with recall campaign implementation should be familiar with this procedure.
