Disassembly and assembly instructions

Disassembling






1. Disconnect brake-pad wear cable and brake line. Press in brake pedal with pedal arrester beforehand to avoid brake fluid running out of the reservoir. Dismantle brake caliper.






2. Drive out hub cap with multi-purpose tool VW771 together with 9165.






3. Pry out radial oil seal with a large screwdriver. Be careful not to damage contact surface for seal.

4. Remove brake disk from wheel hub and heat wheel hub to 120 - 150 °C (250 - 300 °F).






5. Drive out bearing races, alternating sides, with a punch.

Assembling

Note: Lubricate wheel bearing and seal with multipurpose grease e.g. Shell Retinax A.

1. Heat wheel hub to 120 - 150 °C (250 - 300 °F).






2. Insert outer bearing race and press in to the stop with press tool Vw 447 h.





3. Insert inner bearing race and press in to the stop with press tool VW 447





4. Insert the inner wheel bearing and press in the seal ring using special tool Vw 433 until the seal ring is flush with the hub. Observe the installation position of the seal ring.





5. Adjust front wheel bearings, taking the following points into consideration:
Tighten the lock nut slightly, for which the hub must be turned. Loosen the lock nut until it is just still possibie to move the thrust plate with a screwdriver with finger pressure. Do not support the screwdriver on the hub.

6. Tighten fillister-head screw of the lock nut with 50 Nm, without turning the lock nut.
7. Recheck the adjustment by moving the thrust plate, correct if necessary.
8. Connect brake line and brake-pad wear cable. Bleed brake system.
