Valve Guide: Service and Repair
VALVE GUIDES
1. Clean and inspect cylinder head. Cylinder heads whose valve seats or sealing surfaces can no longer be machined are not suitable for replacement of valve guides.
2. Using spot facer, grind off enough of valve guides protruding from camshaft end so that guides are flush with cylinder head. Be careful not to damage guide collar for spring retainers.
3. Place cylinder head on tool 9220 or equivalent.
4. Using tool 9224 or equivalent, loosen valve guides from camshaft end by tapping lightly, then press out rest of guides using suitable press.
5. Measure bores in cylinder head with an internal gauge.
6. Using replacement valve guide part No. 92810432852, grind until outside diameter is .0024-.0031 inch greater than bore measurement.
7. Coat valve guides with talcum powder and install by tapping lightly, then, using tool 9221 or equivalent, align valve guides and press into cylinder head against stop from camshaft side. If suitable equipment is available, cool valve guides in liquid oxygen and press into cylinder head heated to 374°F. Cylinder head should not be heated to 374°F. for longer than 90 minutes.
8. Using broach, ream out valve guides to .3543-.3549 inch.
