Heater Core: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove splash guard and drain cooling system.
3. Remove steering wheel, if necessary and steering column switch.
4. Remove instrument cluster frame.
5. Remove radio.
6. Remove A/C knee guard or shelf, if equipped.
7. Remove control switch and blower knobs, then remove frame from heater control assembly.
8. Remove instrument cluster assembly.
9. Disconnect control switch electrical connector. Disengage and pull out blower switch and disconnect electrical connector.
10. Disconnect electrical connectors from center console, then remove center console.
11. Remove radio speaker cover and speakers. Remove instrument panel center.
12. Remove left and right A pillar covers.
13. Remove instrument panel from the left and right sides.
14. Remove instrument panel from heater control housing, then disconnect air hoses and pull out instrument panel.
15. Remove pulse transmitter plug holder and position aside.
16. Disconnect heater valve control cable and remove heater valve.
17. Press out plastic button on blower cover, then disconnect seal on body and remove cover.
18. Remove flap duct (box) assembly.
19. Disconnect electrical connector, then remove blower assembly attaching bolts.
20. Remove blower.
21. Remove inside holder above heater core case.
22. Coat heater hoses in engine compartment with soapy water, then remove heater core case with heater hoses.
23. Separate case halves and remove heater core.
24. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Check position of cables between control switch and defroster flap as well as heater valve.
b. Connect heater hoses before installing heater core case.
c. Lubricate double grommet and heater hoses with soapy water and slide heater hoses in while installing heater core case assembly.
d. Place cover into fresh air chamber before tightening heater core case attaching screws.
e. Lengthen seal uniformly before installing onto cover assembly.
f. Temporarily place strip of plastic sheeting on seal in rear of cover while installing cover assembly.
