Air bag supplementary restraint systems have been standard equipment on all Porsche models since model year 1990. The air bag, in conjunction with the three point seat belts and integrated headrests, provides optimum safety for front seat occupants. Air bag supplementary restraint systems have been available on some 944 models since 1987.

In the event of an air bag deployment, please contact the Technical Support Department by telephone at (702) 348-3253 or (702) 348-3254 or your District Service Manager by telephone as soon as possible.

It is the responsibility of all dealers to make Porsche Cars N.A. aware of all air bag deployments. IN ADDITION, IN CASE OF SUCH DEPLOYMENT, ALL OF THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS MUST BE REPLACED:

Both Impact Sensors Control Unit Contact Plate Both Air Bag Units

PLEASE BE SURE TO CONSULT ALL APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS PRIOR TO THE REMOVAL, REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF AN AIR BAG SYSTEM.

CAUTION:
Extreme care must be used when working on the air bag system. Porsche special tool P-9259 (order # 000 721 925 90) is required for removal of the air bag system components. To prevent possible unintentional air bag activation, disconnect the battery negative cable and insulate that cable to avoid inadvertent grounding. Wait 20 minutes after disconnecting the battery cable to allow for discharge of the capacitor in the air bag control unit. If you fail to do so, you may cause the air bags to deploy during their removal. The non-deployed air bag gas generators contain an explosive powder charge. Handle these with extreme care.

In the event of a collision where the vehicle is considered a total loss and the air bag system has not been deployed, air bag units should be removed and shipped in approved containers to:

Porsche Cars North America, Inc.
Attn: Technical Support Department
4775 Aircenter Circle
Reno, Nevada 89502

You may obtain such containers by contacting the Technical Support Department. Air bag system components must not be sold for salvage and /or installed on another vehicle.

The dealer parts department should be made aware of all information concerning safe handling of air bag equipment. In addition, over-the-counter sales of air bag components should prompt parts department personnel to inquire about possible air bag deployment and notify the Technical Support Department if appropriate.
