Camshaft Installation

1. Install camshaft and ensure that it turns freely.
2. Lubricate rotating surfaces with suitable lubricant.
3. Install new sealing ring and O-ring and tighten three attaching screws.
4. Install thrust washer, replacing as necessary.
5. Install spacing washers to same thickness as removed, then install key.
6. Install camshaft sprocket flange.
7. Install camshaft sprockets. Camshaft sprockets are axially offset but are interchangeable. Mount camshaft sprocket on left bank so that deeper recess is visible. Mount camshaft sprocket on right bank so that shallow recess faces back.
8. Torque camshaft sprocket attaching nut to 108 ft. lbs., or attaching bolt to 86 ft. lbs.
9. Align camshaft sprockets in relation to drive sprockets as follows:
a. Push intermediate shaft and camshaft toward flywheel to seat shafts against bearing thrust flanks.
b. Using straightedge and depth gauge, measure through the hole below the intermediate shaft against front flank of drive sprocket.
c. Rest straightedge against crankcase in line with camshaft end and measure from near side of straightedge to front flank of drive sprocket.
d. If measurement obtained in steps b and c differ by more than .01 inch, add or remove spacers between camshaft sprocket flange and thrust plate as necessary.

Fig. 3 Aligning camshaft sprockets.:

e. Push camshaft of cylinders 1 through 3 forward to rest against flank and repeat steps b and c. When checking alignment of camshaft sprocket for cylinders 1 through 3, add 2.157 to distance A, Fig. 3.
f. Adjust camshaft sprocket for cylinders 4 through 6 so that distance A, Fig. 3, is the same for both sprockets.
10. Install rocker arms, adjust valve timing and adjust valve clearance. Refer to Engine/Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods.
