Radio - Discharged Battery/Alarm System Malfunction
Group9
Number
9308
Part Identifier
9093
September 14, 1993
Subject:
Incorrect radio installation can cause a discharged battery and alarm system malfunction through the alarm system contact on the radio mounting frame.
ATTENTION: Service Manager / Service Technician
Models Affected:
All 4, 6 and 8 cylinder cars from Model Year 1989
General Information:
From Model Year 1989, an alarm contact for the radio is added to the alarm system. With the CD-2 and CR-1 radios, the alarm contact is integrated into the radio chassis.
With all other radio types, the alarm contact is part of the radio mounting frame and works in conjunction with an insulating strip adhered to the right side of the radio housing. (See illustration.)
When installing original or replacement radios (excluding CD-2 and CR-1 radios), be aware of the following:
1. When the radio is fully installed, the alarm contact on the radio frame must bear against the insulating strip on the right side of the radio. If the insulating strip is not installed, the battery will become discharged and the alarm system will malfunction.
2. When service installing a radio or replacing the original type of radio with another type (excluding CD-2 and CR-1), the radio mounting frame with integrated alarm contact can be installed. The alarm contact connecting cable is already installed in the area of the radio opening in the dash.
Connecting cable color code:
944 through model '90 = Brown/Black
944/968 from model '91 = Brown/Blue
All 911 = Green
928 through model '91 = Brown/Green
928 from model '92 = Brown/Yellow
Before connecting the alarm contact to the radio mounting frame, the alarm system function through the cable can be checked. To do so, arm the alarm system and ground the radio alarm contact cable end. The alarm should then sound. As of model '91, the lock button diodes will blink rapidly for approximately 10 seconds. The connecting cable should then be grounded after which the alarm will sound.
