Valves


1. Remove cylinder head as previously described.
2. Using tool US1020 or equivalent, compress valve spring.
3. Remove split valve keepers and valve spring retainer.
4. Remove valve springs and spring seat.
5. Remove burrs from valve cotter seats as necessary.
6. Remove valves.
7. Remove valve stem seal and valve spring height adjustment shims.
8. Recondition cylinder head and/or valves as necessary.
9. Check valve springs with standard spring tester. When replacing valve spring, inner and outer spring must be replaced as a set.
10. Check installed length of valve spring as follows:
a. Install tool P10c or equivalent with respective spring retainer and both valve keepers.
b. Determine indicated value. Installed length of intake valve should be 1.346-1.370 inch. Installed length of exhaust valve should be 1.346-1.370 inch.
c. If installed length of valve is not within specifications, adjust with correct number of shims. Thickness of shim is .0197 inch.
11. Replace valve stem seals on both intake and exhaust valve guides.
12. Install valve springs. Outer spring is progressively wound and the closely wound coils should be at cylinder head side. It is not necessary to check installed length of inner springs.
13. Test valve seating.
