Functional Overview

This is how the information is processed in the Tiptronic control unit

The Tiptronic control unit is located below the left-hand seat and is built into a housing that is slightly smaller than the Digital Motor Electronics (DME) control unit located in the same place.

The following parameters are constantly supplied to the Tiptronic control unit:

Parameter Type of measurement

^ Throttle position Potentiometer resistance

^ Throttle actuation Time for change of resistance
speed at potentiometer

^ Engine speed Frequency measurement (from DME)

^ Driving speed No. of pulses at pole wheel of transmission shaft

^ Vehicle Signal from transverse acceleration
sensor transverse
acceleration on center console

^ Vehicle Change of no. of pulses
axial acceleration/ within clock time
deceleration

The above values are determined several times per second and are processed in the control unit.

By comparing those measurements with the stored programs, factors are generated that cause the transmission to enter or to shift into one of the five shift curves.
