Safety Precautions
WARNING: Wash your hands after touching triggered airbag units.Airbag units are Pyrotechnic (Explosive) devices. Handling, transport and storage are subject to legislation for explosives.
Shipping Airbag Components
The shipment of airbag units may only take place in the packaging officially approved for transportation. Airbag units must not be shipped together with other dangerous items.
Within a company, transportation is only permitted in the trunk or cargo room of a vehicle using the above transport packaging. Transportation in the passenger compartment is not permitted.
Airbag Component Storage
When storing airbag units, make sure that the padded side faces up (danger of injury if an airbag unit is ejected in case of accidental ignition).
Airbag units may not be stored together with other products classified as hazardous materials (paints, etc.).
Testing, Servicing, or Installing Airbag Units
Testing and installing operations may only be performed by qualified personnel.
The following safety measures must be implemented before work on airbag systems or on adjacent items is carried out if there is a danger of live electrical components coming into contact with the airbag systems:
- Switch off ignition.
- Disconnect and cover negative battery terminal.
NOTE: From model '96, the buzzer contact supplies power to the airbag control unit. For work on the airbag system, the ignition key must always be removed (to ensure that the buzzer contact is switched OFF).
After the battery has been disconnected, assembly or other operations on the vehicle involving the use of a hammer may only be started after a waiting time of 1 minute. This is to ensure that the power supply to the airbag system is interrupted and that no accidental ignition of the airbag can occur.
The airbag unit must be assembled immediately after removal from it's storage location. The airbag unit must never be left unattended. When work is interrupted, the airbag unit/s must immediately be placed in a secured storage area again.
Airbag units must never come into contact with grease, oil, solvents or similar substances.
Airbag units must never be subjected to temperatures above 90°C, not even briefly.
Airbag units and control units that have dropped from a height of more than 0.5 m(1.6 ft.) may no longer be installed.
No additional trim, decals or similar items may be attached to the steering wheel and in the passenger airbag area.
No modifications may be made to the wiring and components of the airbag system.
Always disconnect the battery before starting straightening or welding operations with an arc welder.
When welding operations are required in the immediate vicinity of the control unit, the control unit must be removed before starting operations.
Do not repair airbag components. They must ALWAYS be replaced.
