Function:
To precisely determine the crankshaft position, a Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor is needed.
Engine speed and crankshaft position is monitored via an inductive sensor. A larger gear notch in the ring gear serves as reference mark. Through the larger notch, a higher voltage is induced in the sensor.
A soft iron core partially bundles the magnetic field produced by the permanent magnet which then enters the space and closes again through the magnetically conductive parts of the engine. A steel toothed ring moving past the face of the sensor affects the magnetic field. The change in the magnetic field induces an electric charge that is used by the ECM.
Diagnostic Conditions:
A DTC is stored in memory when no Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor signal is recognized within 60 crankshaft revolutions and when the engine speed is above 500 rpm
Wiring Diagram:
NOTE:
A missing CKP sensor signal is not recognized when starting the engine and is therefore not stored. This will lead to an ECM reset.
The distance of the sensor is not adjustable.
The steel toothed ring is stamped from sheet steel,, Take great care when installing and removing the flywheel be cause force acting on the steel toothed ring can deform it.
Diagnostic Procedure:
1. Check signal with engine tester.
1. Connect special tool 9616.
2. Connect engine tester. Use special input; connect positive cable to pin 78, negative cable to pin 20.
3. Start engine or crank engine with starter motor.
2. Check wiring from CKP Sensor to ECM for breaks and short circuit.
1. Connect special tool 9616 to wiring harness.
2. Remove connector at CKR sensor.
3. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 78, and connector, pin 1.
Specified Value: 0 - 5 Ohms.
4. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 20, and connector, pin 2.
Specified Value: 0- 5 Ohms.
5. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 28, and connector, pin 3.
Specified Value: 0 - 5 Ohms.
6. Connect ohmmeter to special tool 9616, pin 78, and ground.
Specified Value: Infinity Ohms.
