Convertible Top Side Flap Microswitch Modification

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (996)

Model Year:
As of 1999 (X)

Concern:
Binding of the convertible top side flaps.

Information:
The upper microswitch (see arrow in figure 1, right side shown) on the left and right side flap may actuate too late, causing the flap motor to over run and bind the flap at its upper position. If this happens, the convertible top can no longer be closed.

The switching point of the side flap microswitch has been changed to switch off the flap motor earlier. This is accomplished by bending down the tab of the microswitch. This modification was introduced into production as of September 15th, 1999 from vehicle number 99 6YS 62 5601.

Work Procedure:

1.0 Check to see if the flaps are binding first.

1.1 Remove the ignition key.

1.2 Remove the rear wall lining behind the rear seats (a in figure 2). Remove the red Allen key from its from its holder. (b in figure 2)

1.3 Remove the round plastic covers from the hard top mounts (c in figure 2).

1.4 Insert the Allen key into the drive axle of the left side flap. Turn the Allen key 2 to 3 turns counter clockwise.

1.5 Repeat step 4 for the right side. Remove Allen key from the right side.

1.6 Switch on ignition, engage the parking brake and try to close the convertible top electrically with the rocker switch. If the convertible top will now close, the switching point of the upper microswitch must be modified. Continue with the work procedure to modify the upper microswitch. If the convertible still will not function, the problem is elsewhere and needs to be diagnosed.

2.0 Modifying the upper microswitch.

2.1 Move the convertible top to the service position.

2.2 Pull the convertible top compartment lining back to access screws securing the cover trim for the rollover protection.

2.3 Remove the cover from the rollover protection bracket (see arrows in figure 4).

2.4 Remove both hard top mount brackets.

2.5 The location of the upper microswitch is shown in figure 5.

2.6 Measure down from the top or the worm gear bracket to the end of the microswitch lever as outlined in figure 6. We will call this measurement "A1".

2.7 Bend down the microswitch lever 1 mm to 2 mm. It is necessary to counter hold the lever in the area marked x in figure 7.

2.8 Take another measurement to the end of the microswitch lever (step 2.6). We will call this measurement "A2".

Note:
Make sure you take both measurements at the same location. If necessary, mark the lever where you take the measurement.

2.9 Subtract measurement A1 from A2 and the difference should be between 1 mm and 2 mm.

2.10 Install the hard top mounting brackets. Torque the bolts to 9.7 Nm(7.0 ftlb.).

2.11 Fold the convertible top tension bow towards the rear. Engage the left and right tension cables.

2.12 Carry out a function test of the convertible top. To do so, open and close the convertible top electrically twice. Check the position of the rear section flaps with the convertible top open. The rear section flaps must be closed fully

2.13 Move the convertible top to the service position again.

2.14 Install all the removed parts.
