Designations and notes

The following preliminary work must be carried out:
- Removing engine
- Removing exhaust system
- Removing oil container
- Removing oil/water bracket
- Remove coolant guide housing
- Setting engine to top dead centre
- Removing bracket for generator

1. Remove oil extraction pump and closure cap. The oil extraction pump flange must be held with a wrench when the oil line on the pump is loosened. Subsequently unscrew the three fastening screws of the oil extraction pump and the three fastening screws of the closure cap, then lever off the two components.

2. Remove valve cover. Unscrew the 17 valve cover screws and remove the valve cover. If the valve cover is stuck, loosen it by gently tapping with a plastic hammer.

3. Check engine position. The cylinder side which is to be worked on must be positioned at TDC of the ignition stroke. The position is correct if none of the cams of the first cylinder belonging to the bank in question are pressing on the flat-base tappets. If the crankshaft is at TDC position and the valves of cylinder 1 or 4 are slightly open, the crankshaft must be turned 360° further.

4. Remove chain tensioner. To do this, unscrew the two fastening screws of the chain tensioner cover and remove the cover.
Then remove the chain tensioner.

5. Remove guide rail. Remove the three fastening screws on the short guide rail between the camshaft sprockets and remove the guide rail.

6. Remove camshaft sprockets. The timing chain must not be loaded when the screw connection of the camshaft sprockets is loosened. When the inlet camshaft is removed, it must be stopped from turning using special tool (holding wrench) 9653, and the exhaust camshaft must be stopped using special tool (holding wrench) 9653/1.

7. Remove oil guide housing. Unscrew the three hexagon socket head bolts and remove to the front. Heat the screws with a hot air gun. The oil guide housings of cylinders 1 to 3 and 4 to 6 differ in length. The oil guide housing of the bank belonging to cylinders 1 to 3 is longer.

8. Remove the thrust bearing cover. Unscrew the six fastening screws and lift the thrust bearing cover out.

9. Remove camshaft bearing saddles. To do this, uniformly loosen both fastening screws of the corresponding bearing saddle in increments of one-half turn each. Remove the bearing saddles in the specified order.

10. Remove the camshaft bearing saddles. Lift the bearing saddles up and off. The bearing saddles must not be confused.

11. Remove the flat-based tappets. Pull the flat-based tappets upwards out of the camshaft housing. In order to avoid confusing the individual flat-based tappets, they should be placed on a prepared sheet of paper as shown in the diagram.

WARNING:
Do not confuse the flat-base tappets.
The flat-base tappets have been run in in their housing. Therefore, they must not be interchanged or soiled.

12. Remove the camshaft housing. Unscrew and remove the 18 hexagon-head bolts in the order specified. Then remove the camshaft housing.
