New PCM Control Unit

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (996), 911 Carrera 4 (996)

Model Year:
As of 1999 (X)

Concern:
Proper coding of the instrument cluster after a new PCM is installed.

Information:
As of model year 2000 (Y), the software which calculates total mileage and fuel consumption in the PCM has been changed. The software has also been changed in the instrument cluster to coincide with the PCM. If a new PCM is installed in an earlier vehicle, the instrument cluster will have to be reprogrammed with new correction numbers. Failure to do so will result in the instrument cluster displaying a different total mileage and fuel consumption than the PCM.

Parts:

Work Procedure:
Programming the instrument cluster with the new correction numbers.

1. Hook up the PST2 and switch on the ignition.

2. Select "Special Functions" in the Vehicle type menu.

3. Select "New correction number" in the control module menu and continue with the key.

4. The following message is displayed: "Prerequisites: Engine OFF. Switch ignition on. All vehicle systems OK (carry out general search if necessary)".

5. Continue with the >> key and start the function with the F8 key.

6. When the programming is complete, the PST2 will display "C number has been changed successfully". If an error has occurred during programming, "Function aborted" will be displayed.

7. Return to start menu and switch off PST2.

Note:
Model year 2000 (Y) vehicles produced before mid-December 1999, have the former part number PCMs installed in production. The software programming in those PCMs were updated to match the 2000 instrument cluster.
