Fitting the Drive Shaft to the Transmission: Combinations Permitted For the Boxster

Fitting The Drive Shaft To The Transmission: Combinations Permitted For The Boxster
The following changes apply only to the Boxster (and not the Boxster S).

As of model '03 (3 range), light-weight monobloc drive shafts -B- are being used instead of friction-welded drive shafts -A- in Boxsters with manual and Tiptronic transmissions. Drive shafts -A and B- differ with regard to dimensions -1, 2 and 3-. The appropriate assigned fastening screws and plates must be used (see the table).

Friction-welded drive shafts -A- are available and are to be installed for repairs in models up to '02.

In the case of the Boxster S (manual and Tiptronic transmission) the friction-welded drive shafts (using an M10 fastening screw) are installed as before.

Manual transmissions and Tiptronic drive shafts also differ with regard to length in both the monobloc version -A- and the friction-welded version -B- (see the spare parts catalogue). To distinguish between the two, new drive shafts are labelled accordingly.

Drive Shaft Fastening: Combinations Permitted For The Boxster

NOTE:
- Monobloc drive shafts -B- haw bores for M10 fastening screws (dia. approx. 10.2 mm) on the inner joint.
- As the transmission flange in Tiptronic vehicles is also equipped with M8 thread (also in conjunction with monobloc drive shafts), special screws -2- with M8 thread and a shank diameter of 10 mm -arrows- are used to compensate for the larger bores of 10.2 mm on the joint.
- The special screws -2- are also used in manual transmission vehicles produced as of model '03, since the transmission flange with M 10 thread is only available from November 2002.

There are 3 versions of the transmission flange for the Boxster (not for the Boxster S): 1 flange for Tiptronic transmission with M8 thread (irrespective of model year and drive shafts) and 2 flanges for manual transmission (1 with M8 thread and 1 with M10 thread).

In accordance with the drive shaft version -A or B- and depending on the transmission flange, the stipulated screws -1, 2 or 3- and plates -d = 8.2 mm or d = 10.2 mm- must be used.
