Engine: Testing and Inspection
Checking crankcase for leaks - flywheel side
Caution
Absolute cleanliness is essential when working on the engine. Even the smallest particles of dirt can damage engine components.
Information
^ Checks can be carried out with the units mounted on automatic vehicles only up to and including model year 2001 because on subsequent model year vehicles, the Tiptronic transmission cannot be removed and installed reliably and Porsche AG has therefore not granted approval for repairs.
^ From model year 2002, the entire engine/transmission unit must be removed and then only the engine must be reinstalled.
^ In vehicles with manual transmission, the check can always be carried out with the engine installed.
^ The description permits defined leak detection in the area of the joint, crankshaft sealing ring, intermediate shaft bearing cover and the encapsulated threaded joints.
Requirement: The transmission, clutch, flywheel or drive plate for converter must be removed (depending on the vehicle, see Note)
1. Clean sealing areas thoroughly with brake cleaner, acetone or solvent naphtha
2. Then coat with talcum powder or spray with leak-locating spray (spot check).
3. Fit flywheel (also possible for Tiptronic up to MY 2001).
Information
^ The vehicle must be lowered on the lifting platform in order to warm up the engine.
^ If the vehicle is placed on its wheels or moved in the workshop, the rear axle carrier, support plate and diagonal struts must always be refitted, otherwise this may alter the axle adjustment values.
^ Allow the engine to cool down sufficiently after warming up.
4. Allow engine to warm up (operating time 30-40 minutes). On reaching the operating temperature, rev to different rpm ranges several times.
5. Then allow the engine to cool down again.
6. Remove flywheel and locate any leaks.
7. Remove test medium in the sealing area using solvent naphtha.
8. If leaks are found, carry out appropriate repairs, otherwise reassemble vehicle.
