PCM2 software update.
Information:
This is to inform you of a voluntary Workshop Service Action on certain 2003 model year Boxster and Boxster S vehicles, equipped with the Porsche Communication Management (PCM2) systems. Due to an internal software error, the PCM2 may experience the following problems:
- Start up screen displays the Porsche Crest for a long period of time.
- No audio output after starting vehicle.
- System crashes or is restarted
- PCM2 does not switch off.
Therefore, we ask that the affected vehicles listed below have their PCM2 systems reprogrammed during the Porsche Owner's next visit to your workshop.
Affected Vehicles:
A total of 73 U.S. and 3 Canadian vehicles fall within the scope of this Service Action.
Very Important!
Not every vehicle in the below listed range may be affected. Use the ranges below as a general guideline. Refer to Attachment "A" to determine if a particular vehicle is eligible for this service action. Alternatively, the VIN can be checked in the Porsche e-DCS/WWS for confirmation of an open service action.
The affected Vehicle Identification Numbers are contained in the VIN-Ranges shown.

Caution!
The data loading operation must not be interrupted. Connect the vehicle battery to an appropriate battery charger.
If there is an interruption due to a voltage drop while loading the data may cause malfunctions of the PCM2

Work Procedure:
1. Connect battery charger to the vehicle battery.
2. Transfer the new software version of the PCM2 software.
2.1 Switch on the RCM2 by activating the "On/Off switch" (Fig. 1, Item 8).
2.2 If present, remove CD (navigation/music) by activating the "Eject button" (Fig. 1, Item 23) from the CD slot (Fig. 1, Item 24).
2.3 Insert CD-ROM with inscription "PCM2 update CD 2.0", Part Number, 000 043 250 48 in the CD slot (Fig. 1, Item 24).
2.4 Start the software update
2.4.1 If the software update starts automatically after inserting the CD-ROM, continue with Item 2.12.
2.4.2 If the software update does not start automatically after inserting the CD-ROM, continue with Item 2.5.
2.5 Remove CD-ROM with the inscription "PCM2-Update-CD 2.0", Part Number, 000 043 250 48 again by activating the "Eject button" (Fig. 1, Item 23).
2.6 Remove fuses D9/D8 from the fuse box in the driver's footwell.
2.7 Remove ignition key and switch off the PCM2 by activating the "On/Off switch" (Fig. 1, Item 8). Leave the vehicle, lock the doors with the hand-held transmitter (or vehicle key) and leave it locked for 4 minutes.
2.8 Unlock the vehicle again with the hand-held transmitter (or vehicle key).
2.9 Insert fuses in the order D9 - D8 again into the fuse boxes in the driver's footwell.
2.10 Switch on the PCM2 by activating the "On/Off switch" (Fig. 1, Item 8).
2.11 Insert CD-ROM with inscription "PCM2 update CD 2.0", Part Number, 000 043 250 48 again in the CD slot (Fig. 1, Item 24).
2.12 PCM2 display "Updating software to 2.0", confirm by pressing the "rotary knob" (Fig. 1, Item 17).
- PCM2 display: Update the system software. Device 2 of 3.
- PCM2 display: Update the PCM. Device 3 of 3.
2.13 The PCM2 display reports, "Update successful".
Information: The message about a successful update is brief, afterwards the PCM2 restarts automatically.
2.14 Remove CD-ROM with the inscription "PCM2-Update-CD 2.0", Part Number 000 043 250 48 from the CD slot (Fig. 1, Item 24) by activating the "Eject button" (Fig. 1, Item 23).
3. Vehicles with option No.680 (BOSE sound system): continue with Item 4. Vehicles without I No. 680: continue with Item 6.
4. Transfer the new software version for the BOSE sound system.
Information: Only applies to vehicles in conjunction with PCM2.
4.1 Insert CD-ROM with inscription "BOSE amplifier update CD 2003-2", Part Number 000 043 250 50 into the CD slot (Fig. 1, Item 24).
4.2 Start the software update.
4.2.1 If the software update starts automatically, continue with Item 4.4.
4.2.2 If the software update does not start automatically, continue with Item 4.3
4.3 Remove CD-ROM with the inscription "BOSE amplifier update CD 2003-2", Part Number 000 043 250 50 again by activating the "Eject button" (Fig. 1, Item 23) and insert it again. Information: This procedure should be repeated up to 4 times if the software update does not start automatically. If the software update does not start automatically after the first try, continue with Item 5.
4.4 PCM2 display "Updating software to version 01.19.27", confirm by pressing the "rotary knob" (Fig. 1, Item 17).
- PCM2 display: Update the amplifier. Device 1 of 2.
- PCM2 display: Update the amplifier. Device 2 of 2.
4.5 The PCM2 display reports, "Update successful".
4.6 Remove CD-ROM with the inscription "B0SE amplifier update CD 2003-2", Part Number 000 043 250 50 again by activating the "Eject button" (Fig. 1, Item 23), continue with Item 6.
5. Remove the amplifier according to the Technical Manual, Group 9, Chapter 91 44 19 and install a new amplifier (Part Number 996 645 333 03).
Information: The new amplifier already operates using the software version of "BOSE amplifier update CD 2003-2", Part Number 000 043 250 50 and does not need updating.
6. Insert the removed CD (navigation/music) into the CD slot again (Fig. 1, Item 24).
7. Switch off the PCM2 by activating the "On/0ff switch" (Fig. 1, Item 8).
8. Enter the campaign into the Maintenance booklet.
9. Disconnect the battery charger from the vehicle.
Information: After the update has been finished successfully, the software version of the PCM2, system software, and telephone can be read out by pressing the MAIN and TRIP buttons of the PCM2 simultaneously (Fig. 1, Item 9 and Item 15). The software version displaying on the PCM2 display must be "2.0" (or higher).
The software version of the BOSE amplifier can be read out by simultaneously pressing the FM-AM, AUDIO, and set button (Fig. 1, Item 1, Item 10, and Item 19) under software versions. The software version displaying on the PCM2 display for the BOSE amplifier must be "must be "00011927" (or higher).
