Tightening Torques

WM1 Tightening Torques For The M 96/03 Engine
All O-rings and seals (shaft seals) and micro-encapsulated screws or fastening nuts must be replaced.











Cylinder Head Bolt Sequence





- Step 1: In Sequence 30 Nm (22 ftlb.)
- Step 2: undo all screws
- Step 3: In Sequence 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)
- Step 4: In sequence 2 x 70 degrees torque angle

Intake Manifold
Intake distributor 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)

Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolts
Step 1: tighten slightly
Step 2: another approx. 90 degrees until 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.) reached

Main Bearing Cap Torque

Screws, bearing housing





- Initial tightening: 25 Nm (19 ftlb.)
- Final tightening: 1 x 90 degrees turn

Rod Bearing Cap Torque
- Step 1: tighten bolts by hand
- Step 2: 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)
- Step 3: Retighten with 110° torque angle
- Step 4: Loosen connecting-rod bolts
- Step 5: 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)
- Step 6: Retighten with 110° torque angle

Crankshaft Pulley Torque

Belt Pulley On Crankshaft
- Initial Tightening 50 Nm (37 ftlb.)
- Final Tightening + 90° torque angle

Oil Pump With Coolant Guide Housing 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)

Oil Pump Lid

Position six M6 x 20, two M6 x 80 and one M10 (a/f 15) and tighten with torque -Arrows-. If the oil pump was disassembled, the pressure relief valve (hexagon a/f 17) should be installed with new sealing ring -1-.





M6 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
M10 45 Nm (33 ftlb.)
Pressure relief valve 25 Nm (19 ftlb.)

Drive Plate For Converter On Crankshaft (Tiptronic)
M10 x 1 x 25 (12.9) pan-head screw
Old 25 Nm (19 ftlb.) + 90° torque angle
New 25 Nm (19 ftlb.) + 120° torque angle

Double-Mass Flywheel On Crankshaft 25 Nm (19 ftlb.) + 120° torque angle
M10 x 1 x 50 (12.9) pan-head screw

Exhaust Manifold Bolts 23 Nm (17 ftlb.)
Use new M8 x 28 hexagon-head bolts.

Coolant Pump On Crankcase
M6 x 25 and M6 x 30 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
