Hard Top: Description and Operation

Hardtop

The optional hardtop is available in the exterior color with heated glass rear window is largely based on the previous 911 Carrera (996) model. It increases the practicality of winter use for the Cabriolet and gives the passenger compartment a feeling of sitting in a Coupe. The style of the hardtop echoes the lines of the vehicle as a whole but also emphasizes the originality of the cabriolet body.

The light hardtop weighing approx. 73 lbs. (33 kg) and is made of high strength aluminium alloys. The punch-riveting method used in the production is appropriate to the materials used. It achieves an extremely warp-resistant joint with constant strength. A few details were optimized which contribute to additional noise reduction as well as to an increase in torsion and flexural rigidity of the new 911 Carrera/S Cabriolet.

To optimize noise reduction, the hardtop is now mounted in the rear with two new screw caps located on the side. A special hexagon wrench -D- is included for assembly.

New gaskets were designed for the hardtop to significantly reduce rainwater dripping on the seats during removal. When assembling the hardtop the electric connection to the rear window heating is established automatically and without additional cable connections via the rear mounting points as was the case with the previous model. The installed hardtop is detected by the cabrio top controller using central locking when the front central locking element is locked on the windshield frame. This prevents subsequent operation of the convertible top which could result in damage to the convertible top or hardtop.

The interior monitoring is activated automatically when the vehicle with hardtop is locked and alarmed. When the hardtop is taken off and the convertible top is opened, this is deactivated.

The inside of the hardtop is lined with fabric having excellent noise insulating properties which is also used for convertible top lining. The synthetic linings which are used are completely matched to the color and material of the vehicle interior. The front central locking element is surrounded by a synthetic covering.

The high-quality impression and the selection of hardtop material contributes toward a "Coupe ambience" in the passenger compartment. If the hardtop was not ordered optionally with the new vehicle, subsequent installation is possible later on via the Tequipment program.

Due to low demand with the previous Cabriolet models, a Roof
Transport System for the new 911 Carrera/S Cabriolet will no longer be offered. Due to this, the visually unattractive covers on the side in front of the convertible top compartment cover (used to cover the threaded joint points) have been omitted.
