Replacing Valve Stem Seals
Replacing valve stem sealsTools
Preliminary work
Preliminary work
1. Remove camshafts.
2. Take roller-type cam followers out of the cylinder head and lay them on a clean surface, arranged according to cylinders and valves. hydro-tappets'. Do not confuse components.
3. Remove spark plugs.

Note: Observe the most important working regulations and warning notes
--> 'The most important working regulations and warning notes'.
Note:
^ Position the pistons of the relevant cylinder at the bottom dead centre.
^ Each piston is pressed downwards as pressure builds up in the cylinder.
1. Position the pistons of the relevant cylinder at the bottom dead centre.
Positioning The Tool:
2. Attach the lever tool 2036 -1, 2 and 4- to the cylinder head and adjust it. The installation position of the tool must be adjusted for each valve.
3. Screw the adapter T40012-3- into the relevant spark plug thread and constantly supply compressed air (min. 6 bar overpressure). This builds up pressure in the cylinder so that the valve does not fall into the cylinder while you are working.
4. Attach additional tool VW 541/1A-5- under the pipe of the lever tool 2036 and press the concave washer on the valve down using the pressure piece. Keep pressing the washer down.
5. Remove the two valve keys from the valve using pointed-nose pliers or a fine magnet.
6. Relax the concave washer and valve spring and remove loose components.
7. Remove the valve stem seals from the valve using a puller 3364.
Positioning The Tool:
8. Push a plastic sleeve -A- on to the valve (protects the valve stem seal from the key grooves). Oil a new valve stem seal -B- and insert it into the press-on tool 3365-1-.
Positioning The Tool:
9. Fit the valve stem seal using the press-on tool 3365-1-.
10. Fit the valve springs, concave washers and valve keys using the additional tool VW 541/1A and lever tool 2036.
11. Remove the air connection and fit it to the next spark plug thread.
12. Replace the next valve stem seal using the procedure described above.
Note: Before switching to another cylinder, the cylinder must be positioned at the bottom dead centre and supplied with compressed air (see above).
Subsequent work
Subsequent work for replacing valve stem seals
1. After all the valve stem seals have been replaced, fit roller-type cam followers correctly.
2. Install camshafts.
